Henderson sits on the same desert-basin geology as the rest of the valley — caliche (a cemented calcium-carbonate layer) and pockets of expansive clay that swell when wet and shrink when dry — and nearly every home here is slab-on-grade, many post-tensioned, with copper supply lines embedded in or running beneath the concrete. Water your landscaping against the foundation, a supply line sweats, or monsoon runoff pools in one corner, and that ground moves — grinding pipes against concrete and caliche. Then there's the water itself. Henderson runs its own utility — City of Henderson Utility Services — which buys treated Colorado River water wholesale from the Southern Nevada Water Authority (treated at the Alfred Merritt Smith and River Mountains plants) and delivers it through the city's own distribution system. The city's water quality report puts total hardness at typically 304 mg/L — 18 grains per gallon, squarely "very hard," and a notch harder than Las Vegas proper's 16 gpg — with the city telling softener owners to set 16–19 grains. Dissolved calcium bakes onto heating elements, chokes aerators, pits faucet cartridges, and shortens water heater life. Which is exactly why water softeners are near-universal in Henderson garages — and why protecting that softener is protecting every other fixture in the house.
